The Bay House is the ultimate West Coast destination for a relaxed and recreational day out. Treat yourself to contemporary cuisine, an espresso, a wine, awe inspiring scenery, a surf lesson, a stroll to the seal colony, a hike to the light house, a contemplative rest on the beach, a massage, an evening drink on the deck, a sunset. a perfect day.
Originally built as a family bach by Westport's general practitioner in 1929, the Bay House became the Buller Board Riders headquarters and was occupied by the local surfing fraternity from the late sixties up until the early nineties. This was a colourful era for the Bay House with many long time locals refining their sporting and social skills here!
The bach was eventually purchased by one entrepreneurial surfer who was locally a well reputed baker - rumour has it the surfers used to eat so much of his baking that he decided to start selling it to them, and so the Bay House was born and established as a cafe in 1995. Since its infancy the Bay House has grown into an iconic West Coast restaurant and is home to the West Coast Surf School and the Healthwise Naturopathy and therapeutic massage clinic.
'If you're heading to Westport then a trip to Cape Foulwind is essential and was certainly a highlight of our recent visit to the area... it would be hard to top The Bay House as being one of New Zealand's most picturesque eating environments.' Michael Guy's Eating Out guide Spring 2006
