Apple Tree Cottage is historic backpackers located 1.5km from the Tauranga City Centre. It is small and cosy being a friendly family-run hostel. Waterfront location with trees, garden and camping sites.
A series of small buildings built round a relaxing garden, Apple Tree Cottage has also a solar-heated plunge pool and spa available. It is unique in that it has historic features and is quaint, not modern, stark or enclosed.
An inexpensive hostel, it has seasonal rates for kiwifruit workers and the owners help get jobs for its guests where possible. Its location on the harbour or "place of the sleeping waters" gives it a tranquillity and beauty. It is close to walkways and the swimming beach and is also ten minutes from the Mount ocean beach.
There is a bus-stop virtually at the door. We have a dinghy and kayaks and are a short walk from hotels, cafs and shops. In a "top suburb" of Tauranga we provide a true Kiwi stay with a "host" family: Gail, Mark, Kerry and Sheldon. It was founded in 1991.Prices are from $20 for a dorm bed to $50 for a double.
Listed often in the Lonely Planet, Apple Tree's owners have travelled widely and love meeting travellers giving a more personal experience of the old Kiwi way of life. There is no check-out time and we offer a warm welcome and a cup of tea or coffee or filtered water on your arrival.
There is a small cooking kitchen and a barbeque, picnic tables and a TV or reading room. Free telephone and internet charge of only $2.If you like the great outdoors and nature then this is the hostel for you. And yes, we do have the apple trees in the garden. There is camping space and parking (free). We will pick you up from the city and can drive you round to interesting locations if you wish. We also put you in touch with dolphin tours, fishing trips and try and meet your interests in tourism here whether it be art, history or just talking about your travels.
