Wai Maori means freshwater. Pristine turbulent rapids through steep volcanic gorges, deep clear lakes, and meandering spring fed streams. This is the essence of the Volcanic Plateau and the key to our environmental, recreational and cultural identity. Explore this essence with Rafting/Kayaking Wai Maori.
Centrally located in the heart of the North Island; Wai Maori is home based in the thermal village of Tokaanu, on the southern shores of Lake Taupo, and the northern slopes of Tongariro National Park.Within 40 minutes drive from us in every direction is some of the most spectacular scenery of New Zealand. So even travelling to Wai Maori and the freshwater we raft and kayak is awesome. The Whitewater Tongariro is our most popular trip.Raft more rapids on the Whitewater Tongariro, than any other half day professionally rafted river in Aotearoa (New Zealand). A turbulent train of sparkling freshwater descending a steep volcanic and native bush clad gorge. Exploring and jumping the hidden Puketarata Falls will totally quench those that dare (optional & conditions permitting). Enjoy river snacks and when returning back to our base, there's a streamside hot pool afterwards. Or our gentle rafting is to relax through trout laden pools, floating through the scenery of the Lower Tongariro River. Enjoy fun and gentle rapids. Snack on chocolates and drink while circling around an eddy of floating rocks (pumice). Feeding the trout, and our streamside hot pool finishes this unique Wai Maori trip. Ideal for the more mature or non English speaking visitors, and young children accompanied by adults.
There's also our Lake & Stream Kayaking. The spring fed Tokaanu Stream provides a self guided trip out into Southern Lake Taupo. Hipaua steaming cliffs, the Waihi Village and waterfall can be seen from a far. Watch the abundant birdlife, fish, swim and bring a picnic.Return alongside boiling mud and pools for a fulfilling half or full day. Shorter 1 - 1.5 hour trips a
