The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is a 3 day / 2 night circuit tramp. It climbs high on to the Hump Ridge and Okaka Hut at 890 metres ( 2 920 feet ). A scenic loop track amidst sandstone tors and mountain tarns offers 360 degree panoramic views of Stewart Island, the Southern Ocean and the wilderness of Southwest Fiordland. The track then descends along the Hump Ridge to the South Coast track, along old tramlines and across mighty wooden viaducts to the historic Port Craig. Bush and beach tracks following Te Waewae Bay complete the circuit. Two modern back country huts with spacious communal dining areas sleep 40 people with a range of bunk rooms, premium rooms and self contained cabins. Services include gas heating and cooking, solar lighting, flush toilets and a drying room. Cooking, kitchen equipment and pillows are provided. Lodge managers are stationed at the huts in summer months. Free hot porridge is provided for breakfast! During winter the huts are unserviced. Lighting still functions but there is no gas or cooking equipment. The track is a mixture of boardwalk and steps, natural tracks and remains of the old tramline. Track transport and helipacking options are recommended for those that may find the track times or conditions arduous.Track Transport provides a daily service from Tuatapere to Rarakau Carpark and then on a private road by 4WD (no public access) to Track Burn. This reduces the walking distance on the first and last day by about 6km (3.6 m). Helipacking can transfer your backpacks from hut to hut and helilifts are available for the non walkers. The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is a challenging 3 day hike and one to "knock off". Upon completion you will most likely be weary and worn, but carry a deep sense of achievement. Superior accommodation with hot showers, a self contained ensuite cabin, track transport, helipacking and fully guided options are all available.
