The Crossing Backpackers is situated at Erua Village, just 6km outside of the National Park Village at Mt Ruapehu. We offer backpacker-style accommodation for up to 145 people, as individuals or groups, for guests of all ages. Some rooms are furnished with bunks and some with double beds, motel-style family units are also available.
But The Crossing is not just a place to sleep! We have a huge property here and many activities can be organised on-site. Anything to keep you entertained. We have Mayhem Paintball, a Go-Kart track, and an awesome Games/TV room with a pool table and other table games.
If you are looking for an intrepid journey within NZ, there really is no better place to go than the Tongariro National Park. This is an amazing part of the country to explore, and ideal for taking part in the many adventure activities for which the Tongariro National Park is famous.
Activities include tramping, climbing, mountaineering, fishing, cycling, snowboarding, horse trekking and of course, the world famous Tongariro Crossing. We can help you find the right outdoor activity for you. The possibilities are endless!
We understand that in winter, you want to get up that mountain to ski or board. We are centrally located between the biggest Ski fields in New Zealand, Whakapapa and Turoa. Whakapapa is 20 mins drive from the lodge and Turoa can be found within 40min. This means you can easily ski both in one day!!
The heating system at The Crossing Backpackers is second to none. It was recently installed to ensure a healthy dry lodge, even at -10 degrees outside the lodge will maintain a steady warm temperature all year round. Just what you need after a day in the snow!
