Hells Gate & Wai Ora Spa, Rotorua, is New Zealand's unique geothermal, cultural and health & spa experience - all at one location. Home to New Zealand's most active geothermal field, it showcases a large variety of volcanic features such as exploding waters, steaming fumaroles, pools of boiling mud, the only accessible mud volcano and the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere. Set amongst the active geothermal reserve is the Wai Ora Spa and Wellness Centre - where visitors can experience the unique geothermal mud's and sulphurous geothermal waters in privacy or you can bathe in the Hells Gate Mud Baths and Spas with splendid views of the geothermal valley as relax and pamper yourself. Each mud bath contains an excess of 100kgs of the finest geothermal mud's in both a suspended and solid form. Each spa contains pure sulphurous water drawn directly from the geothermal valley. Unaltered, the water cleanses, tones and heals broken skin as it was used in ancient times by the local Maori people. A cornerstone of this uniquely New Zealand Mud Spa experience is the traditional Wai Ora massage. This massage system is based on the concepts of Miri Miri the traditional Maori massage regime that has been practiced for hundreds of years. The massage involves energy balancing, joint manipulation, therapeutic massage, and a face/head massage. Our newest additions to Hells Gate includes our display carving workshop which operates between Monday and Friday. Guests can arrange to take away hand carved pieces which they have created under the guidance of our resident carver. Taste food from our geothermal cooking pools which has a unique flavour. New interpretive signs and self guided maps provide guests with information about the geothermal valley and the bush walk at Hells Gate. Hells Gate operates 364 days of the year (excludes Christmas Day) and is opened from 8.30am - 8.30pm daily including public holidays.
