Kotane - the Maori Experience offers you a tour of an authentically reconstructed pre-European kainga (village). You will be met with a warrior's challenge, then you will hear the haunting karanga ring out as you are welcomed onto the marae. Experience hongi, the ceremonial Maori greeting. After the guided tour of the village, you will be treated to an interactive performance of Maori song and dance. Women are encouraged to take part in the poi dance (once used by maidens to lure young men), while men can learn how to perform the warlike haka, the traditional prelude to battle.
After the performance, you may elect to have a meal in our restaurant, sampling our chef's interpretation of New Zealand dishes using fresh local ingredients.
We offer the option of a guided tour of the New Zealand section of the wildlife reserve, where we house kiwi, kea, tuatara and other exotic and native animals and birds. Your guide will take you through the reserve, where you can feed the kea, kunekune pigs and native eels while listening to an informative talk about the distinctive features of each species. You can see adult kiwi in our unique outdoor enclosure feeding in the undergrowth. Kiwi breeding and rare species conservation are important features of the work in our park.
