Ruapehu district is home to the Tongariro National Park, (New Zealand's oldest national park and a dual listed world heritage area) the Whanganui National Park and the Whanganui River. We've got a mighty volcanic plateau with two of the most active composite volcanoes in the world and we're named after the majestic Mt. Ruapehu which has the two largest ski areas in New Zealand. We're also home to the "Heart of the King Country", the aprs ski capital of the North Island and the carrot capital of New Zealand.
Our mystical Whanganui river is the longest navigable river in the country and in earlier times was known as the Rhine of New Zealand. We've got a Bridge to Nowhere, a world famous Raurimu Railway Spiral, fertile farm land, native flora and fauna and a rich Maori and European heritage.
We're known for our snow sports, guided walks and treks, cultural and eco tours, friendly service and hospitality, canoes, jet boats, mountain bike riding, multi-sport and motorcross events, fishing, hunting, golf courses, winter mardi gras, museums and much more. We've produced and nurtured world champion woodchoppers, champion kayakers, champion skiers and champion stud stock.
Open all year round, Ruapehu district is just waiting to be explored. So pack your bags and come stay for awhile! We look forward to seeing you.
