OMANU GOLF CLUB INC. The name of the club was inspired by the presence of numerous elegant herons on and adjacent to the watercourses bisecting the land. These birds are now symbolised in the club's logo. The literal translation of Omanu is a nesting place for birds. The Omanu Golf Club, inland from the Mount Maunganui coastline, has more resembled a bird in full flight over the 33 years of its existence.
Membership pressures at neighbouring Mount Maunganui and Tauranga clubs saw a meeting convened on 12 May, 1971 and just one year later Omanu opened with a membership of 120. Today, Omanu has a total membership in excess of 1100, with just over 850 full-playing men and women, making it the largest club, numerically, in the combined areas of the Bay of Plenty and Waikato associations.
